U.S. Open to be played at Pinehurst in 2014

The US Open is returning to Pinehurst, North Carolina, in 2014. The announcement came at the Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania by US Golf Association President Walter Driver

The golf atmosphere is wonderful, but it goes beyond that. The public schools are superb; we have one of the best community colleges in the state and a nationally ranked health-care system. Our property tax is in the lowest 10th of the state, and our crime rate also is well below that of surrounding areas.

Pinehurst has become a world-renowned golfing destination with 43 golf courses in the Sandhills region, and has played host to numerous golf tournaments including the recent 2005 U.S. Open. Golfing legends Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, the late Payne Stewart, and Sam Snead have all graced the greens of the local courses. There is a course for every golf lover regardless of skill level.

The golf course development lies on more than one thousand acres — a parcel commonly called “the Brenner tract.” Developer MHK Ventures has already begun construction on the golf course, SRB members learned during the meeting. The Moore County Board of Commissioners approved in June a rezoning which set aside 377 acres for the golf course in a PC-Public and Conservation district.

The residential portion of the development will occupy 646 acres, which under current ordinances could accommodate more than 650 homes, Planner Cris Armstrong told SRB members.

Little River Sale Now Done Deal

New owners took the reins of Little River Golf Resort on Friday.
The hilltop clubhouse now looks out across spreading fairways as the newest member of OceanicoGroup resorts.
"We see this as the birth of OceanicoUSA," said Simon Burgess, describing the sale in terms of the retail value acquired rather than the price paid. "Overall, the value will be between $450 million and $500 million."
Burgess and partner Gerry Fagan own OceanicoGroup, a Portuguese company, which in this deal will own Little River. Oceanico also plans to open two more courses in Europe in the coming year.

Pine Crest Inn

The Pine Crest Inn opened in 1913. The great Donald Ross owned it from 1921 until his death in 1948.

By 1961, the inn had fallen onto hard times. Robert Barrett bought it out of receivership and it has been in the Barrett family ever since.

Barrett became friends with Lionel Callaway, who invented the Callaway scoring system. One night I met him at the hotel and we came up with this idea that it would be fun to chip, so we built this wooden frame and covered it. This began the lobby chipping.
